We’re a couple of nature loving ecotravelers who can’t say no to a good roadtrip.. We love to meet new people, kayak, canoe, hike, backpack & camp … and learn everything about nature that we can along the way. We’ve started chronicling our adventures here. We have three adult kids, but they are all out pursuing their own adventures now.

Some accomplishments include: We thru-hiked the Illinois River-to-River trail, which you can read about using the tab at the top. We are now East Central Illinois Master Naturalist graduates and interns who started a local naturalist hiking group with like-minded folks. Truth is, we hike like people who hike.

  1. Thank you, I spent the afternoon reading your entire journal in between fixing violins! I just recently completed a 40 mile AT section and it may have been the most physically challenging event of my life! (i have ran 2- 26.2 marathons, countless half marathons and more 10ks than I can remember) I turned 60 last March, but will go back to the AT and do another 60 or so miles next fall. In the meantime, I’m taking my wife for a Knobstone Trail hike this spring in southern Indiana and perhaps a venture over to eastern Illinois trek! Congrats on your accomplishment! Many times it appeared you were ready to throw in the towel, but kept on going. I am more about the journey and not the destination, but not all are like that. What’s the point if there is not a lot of enjoyment to it as well.

    • Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comments! This trip really was a life changing event in many ways. I didn’t know if I would be able to do it, going in – and did my best to be honest with myself (and all of you) about where I really was emotionally. I think that made a big difference for me and allowed me to push myself a little bit at a time. I have learned a lot about my own endurance, both physically and emotionally. I was also grateful to take it as slowly as we did. We experienced so much and connected with so many great people as a result. I know we need to get our daily distance up in order to complete the AT, but I will never be a marathon style hiker.

We plan to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in 2019! The Knobstone trail is on our radar, and I’m told its an excellent training hike for the AT. We will be hiking and canoeing the BWCA next summer and are really looking forward to it.

Please stay in touch about your upcoming trips! I would love to hear about how you and your wife enjoy Knobstone, and all the challenges you overcome. If you’re going to write about it anywhere online – please send us the link!

  2. Hi Jana and Thom — it was so nice to meet you at the pre-TBEX NSU tour and chat with you during the conference as well 🙂 You guys are such an awesome, adventurous couple — I hope our paths cross hiking somewhere someday! Three cheers to travel!

    • We were glad to have connected with you as well. I really enjoyed hearing about your travels and how you managed to make it all work. I would love to meet up again some time. We’ll definitely need to stay in touch, so that we can make that a reality!
